Stunned!! šŸ˜® Help! Iā€™m pissed (please read)

Iā€™m a senior manager at large guest service facility. I have a GM above me, two fellow senior managers and 3 assistant managers.

Of our whole management team, I am most approached by the staff for issues they have because Iā€™m very respectful and helpful and I really truly care A LOT about everyone.

One of our staff who is gay approached me because heā€™s overhearing slurs that are offensive to the LGBT community. His idea was to put up a small rainbow flag on the wall of the lunch room and our management teams office to show support!

I went right to work by running it by HR for approval (hate that it even would need approval) and my GM was on board.

One of my assistant managers wrote a huge paragraph in our mangerā€™s memos basically saying it was wrong to ā€œpush that stuff on everyoneā€ heā€™s fine with it in the staff lunch room for the staff only but he doesnā€™t want it in our managerā€™s office. He said ā€œIā€™m not against gays, I just think people should have a choice at work whether they see that stuff because people have different beliefsā€ Iā€™m sorry, supporting the LGBT community isnā€™t a ā€œbeliefā€ itā€™s being a decent human being and loving all people and supporting them in loving who they are and being proud.

Maybe Iā€™m wrong BUT IM SOOOOO FUMING.... its a small flag to show we support the LGBT community in the workplace. We have AT LEAST 2 employees that are out and who knows if others arenā€™t out but could really use that visual reminder that weā€™re inclusive.

What should I do?? Am I wrong? Will pushing the issue do more harm than good?

UPDATE: now my GM has to run things by the companyā€™s director (her boss) because this asshole assistant manager is being an asshole. šŸ™„ itā€™s not a ā€œbeliefā€ to treat other people poorly because they are different than you. Fun fact....everyone is different than everyone! If this all gets stifled because of this ignorant tool then Iā€™m gonna be damn sure I support our LGBT staff in anyway I can on my own.... any ideas??

SAD UPDATE:

Sorry it took so long to update but....basically this company sucks and theyā€™re too afraid to ā€œoffendā€ the hateful ignorant fucks...they claim we can do something small during pride month but I doubt thatā€™ll happen.

Well screw them, the staff member that came to me is doing research at his school with people who have aids/hiv (amazing work) and he asked for a voucher from our company for each participant, so I said no, youā€™re getting 3 vouchers per person whether Head office likes it or not
