Detangler for kids ?

My son is mixed and his hair is INSANELY curly. It’s not kinky but it’s two different kinda curl patterns. It’s most often in a matted mess 
What products can I use to detangle especially when it’s dry ? Or maybe what product will keep it from being a huge knot ??
