What to wear and where to buy

Question

My boyfriend has a work party in December. It is a Christmas ball and I don't know what would be acceptable. Would a long dress be too formal would a knee length sequin dress be too informal?
What would you wear to a Christmas ball? It's at a country club if that helps. 
Also does anyone know where I can buy a nice but cheap dress online.

Okay so if your boyfriend is wearing a suit to the Christmas ball then you can either go formal long dress or knee length dressy, for now I would look at rent the Runway ( you can rent a really nice formal dress) look under black tie dresses and go from there, also if you guys are going to color coordinate may I suggest choosing a color for your dress, that will compliment his dress shirt ( tie or bow tie) he can either wear a full black suit, or smoking jacket : ( velvet blazer jacket, holiday colors ) and black dress pants. 
But since you want to try dresses on, I would go to places like Macy’s, Nordstrom, Lord & Taylor, Dillard’s ( if you have one in your state). Or if you need more places online ( check out ASOS, LuLu’s),  ( BHLDN look under occasion dresses) bcbgeneration, BCBGmaxazria.  Just to get some ideas as to what you want :
