Recommendations for a floor vac?

Ok. So, my living room, dining room and kitchen are all hardwood. My husband has really bad allergies, I usually just sweep them but it flares his allergies up bad because it moves all the bust and dirt into the air. So I need something that will get up the dirt and dust but not throw it into the air? Anyone know of something I can buy to help with that? I used to have a Swiffer sweeper vac but it wouldn't stay charged long enough and died completely within a year.
