Tracing is a great way to start learning to draw. I know someone that learned by tracing: hed trace pokemon characters and anime characters over and over again to learn proportion and style and get the muscle memory down, then eventually started trying to draw the same characters without tracing them. After some practice and time this method worked for him and now hes a very popular anime artist that doesnt need to rely on tracing in order to draw what he desires or get proprtions right.

I mean, it’s ok for practice. Helps to understand proportions and things. However, if you are drawing realistically it’s always easy for me to tell when a source photo was used. I think, if you are seriously interested in art, it’s good to learn to draw from life. It helps your brain learn to translate something 3 dimensional into a drawing. These really no substitute for that. I guess it depends on what you are interested in.
