What did you tell your boss?

Question

I'm planning to start IVF due to male infertility in January 2019. How much did you tell your boss? And if you also manage staff, what did you tell them?

My boss knew, I told her I was starting IVF and told her when I got the positive results from my doctor but only two of my employees know. They are my leads so I wanted them to know if I had to run out from being sick they knew not to worry. I’m waiting to tell the rest of my employees when I hit 12 weeks.

I just was up front about it. I told him we are going to have to do IVF in order to conceive and that I am getting an opportunity of a life time and was picked to be in a study which makes it more affordable. They were understanding and I just keep him up to date as soon as I know about an appointment.

I told my principal and hr director (I’m a teacher). They were super supportive and even managed to get my first period as my prep Incase my morning monitoring went longer than normal, which came in handy a bunch of times.

I told my director and my manager. It was great cause they gave me 2 weeks off during my ET, I work at a busy trauma level ll hospital

I told my boss the truth.  With all the appointments I’ll have during IVF, some with really short notice, I wanted her to know why.

I told my manager, my trainee, and my cover. They were all supportive and as I’m salary I could manage my schedule around dr appt. Unfortunately, we need to do a second round. So this time I talked with HR, they considered it covered under FMLA, so this time I’ll be taking 3 weeks off (we’re also switching clinics and going to Barbados for 15 days for retrieval and fresh transfer). HR even offered (wants) to discuss with my manager what he’s allowed to disclose to other employees and managers - ie nothing, it’s considered medical leave and a personal issue. HR actually seemed concerned I didn’t go to them the first time, privacy laws and FMLA/discrimination over time off can be a nightmare for them I guess!

In my prior job, I just told my boss and none of my employees. I supervised 35 people and didn’t feel they all needed to know. 
I started a new job right when we started IVF so I told my boss my first week, which was tough. I no longer supervise employees but I told my coworkers since we work super closely together and share an office. At this point, they know more than my own family.

I told my manager. I didn’t need to tell him anything about the process because him and his wife had been through it and he just told me to take what I needed.

I would definitely give them a heads up. I didn’t and then got super emotional (not like me) after my boss asked why I was taking so much time off. Like ugly crying in his office and then started laughing and crying cause it was so uncomfortable. He was super understanding and I wished I had done it earlier to relieve some stress during an already stressful thing like IVF. The more support you can get during it the better you’ll handle it all!! Good luck! I am 30+ weeks now and so excited to meet my baby boy!
