Am I the only one who doesn't understand "upgrade rings"

I've heard this so often. Like I honestly don't understand this idea. Like it's one thing to get a new ring when styles change or something... but why does it have to be an "upgrade"? I got a new ring that was a plain band because I started reacting to the nickel in my white gold for a while.

Maybe I'm concentrating too much on semantics, but I feel like you upgrade things because they're not good enough. I would have been happy with anything my husband had bought, I don't get why something with such sentimental value needs to be "upgraded".
