Last name change?

Question

Would it be weird if I changed my last name to something for my baby and I? (currently pregnant)
It was going to be my partners but he left me and my last name is technically the last name of a man who left my adoptive mom. 
I just don’t know if this is abnormal & dont want to have to explain myself to people...

I think that sounds awesome. You are creating this amazing little family for yourself and your baby, and you deserve a name that means you guys, not somebody else. I think it would be empowering and beautiful and entirely appropriate.

I think it's great, and I would if I were in your situation. I wanted to change my last name to my mother's maiden name once I cut my father out of my life.

I wish I would have take my step dads name when my parents got married. Then my oldest son wouldn’t have a hyphenated name with my stupid biological father that has nothing to do with me. So yeah. I understand that. You will just have to petition for a name change for yourself.

I have a friend who, broadly speaking, it sounds like she had a similar childhood. When she was old enough to do do for herself, she changed her surname to something unrelated to anyone else in her life (including her mother’s maiden name) and so later when she had a baby, she gave the baby her new surname also. The father didn’t stick around, which I gather was for the best for the baby.

Do it! It’s not traditional but it’s not abnormal. I know many people that have changed their names, I did before I got married since I was giving our son my partners last name. That way we would all match, I wasn’t wanting to marry him at that time and a simple name change did the trick.
