So since Christmas is coming up, I was at work and a group of co-workers were talking about Christmas shopping and gifts etc. I said that my family/friends and I ask each other what do they want for Christmas and we get them that plus a little something extra like gift cards so they get what they really need so no money is wasted and the other person is happy too.

And one of the girls just looked at me horrified and started saying ‘OMG NOOO. Thats not how Christmas gifts are supposed to be! They have to be a surprise so that the other person feels the Christmas spirit and excitement’. Well okay, I get her point and it’s actually a valid argument. BUT, she further went on saying that ‘you probably won’t understand it since you’re brown (I’m Indian but I’ve been living in Canada from 8 years now), that isn’t how its done.

And thats made me feel weird. She legit screamed at me in front of 5 other people. I mean is it really that wrong to ask people what they want as gifts? My logic is that I got to college and all my friends are college students too and it’s expensive so why not ask and give something that they’re actually going to use than giving them scented candles 🤷🏻‍♀️.
