Paying for your own Christmas dinner

I just saw a story about how a guys mom was charging $21 a person for Christmas because she apparently wanted everything to be premade. Now when my family went to spend Thanksgiving with my dads side, my cousin rented out a place for the family to get together and everyone had to help cover the costs but it wasn’t per person. What do y’all think about this and being required to bring a dish to dinners like this? I personally feel like it’s rude to not bring something to a dinner unless you’re told not to.
