Little Mermaid promoting sexual assault?

So there’s an article (I didn’t screen shot it because it would’ve been like, 20 pictures and if you want to read it that bad you can google it.)

A group of girls from Princeton have expressed discomfort as a male A cappella group sang “Kiss the Girl” from the Little Mermaid at a recent concert. They said they felt uncomfortable because with the context of the song, the singer (Sebastian) is encouraging the prince to kiss Ariel without consent. They can’t communicate in the movie due to Ariel not having a voice, and the fact that men were singing this song in the concert made them feel it was promoting a world were consent isn’t important. They are asking that the group no longer perform the song.

Now, to be totally honest, I thought it was stupid when I was first reading, but then I thought about how many older Disney movies promote a “go with the romance” mentality. I don’t know if they need to stop singing the song, but maybe movie creators need to be more aware of the subtle message me they send out?

What are your thoughts?
