What is a mucus plug???

Just wondering because I have been having a thick mucus looking something when I wipe and it's freaking me out. Can anyone give me ideas of what else it could still?

It’s a plug of mucus that forms around the cervix to protect the uterus from pathogens, bacteria, water, etc. when you are pregnant. It usually dislodges 12-48hrs before labor. It isn’t usually an on going process, more like it just shows up in one large glob, sometimes it can be twinged with blood (bloody show).
