Do you send out thank you cards after your kid's birthday party?

I do. I feel obligated to. I feel like with other occassions like baby showers or weddings, you send thank you cards. So when you receive a gift at a birthday, I assume you'd do the same.

If they are thanked in person, then a card isn’t necessary. If they were no longer there when the gift was opened, then a thank you is needed.

Nope.  Your kid should be writing the thank you notes.  I did when I was a kid.

I always write a thank you note for those things. Once our daughter is old enough to write, she'll be doing it herself. But we always make sure to send thank you cards for birthdays, holidays and any other occasions where a thank you is necessary.
