Custody battles
This is all going on in Maine. I know different states have different laws, not sure if anyone can give me some insights.
My brother and law and his girlfriend just broke up. She didn't leave him know until after she brought a load of boxes to her dad's.
She called her dad one night and said she didn't feel safe around her boyfriend. Took their daughter and spent the night at her dad's. She went back the next morning and spent and entire week+ and kept telling her boyfriend he could sleep in the bed with her instead of on the couch. He declined because she seems to be maybe up to something...
Her dad ended up paying to get her into a big apartment which she may not be able to afford without help. Brother in law owns his own trailer.
Her family came over and took everything they owned and all the daughter's clothes, even all of his food.
She's hashtag singlemoming it up on social media. We all pitched in and replaced just about everything he could need to have a complete home.
He is on social security disability and I'm not sure what her job is but some days she works from like 5am to 9pm.
She was under the impression that she would have full custody no questions asked because she's the mom. He got custody papers and filled out that he wanted primary custody and asking for no child support. He brought it over and explained if she didn't sign it he'd have to pay a sheriff to come over to serve her the papers. She signed it and now they're waiting for mediation.
She's been trying to dictate where the daughter goes. He insisted on getting her since he didn't have the daughter for days. She tried saying she wanted her parents to take her for a couple of nights that would have been considered his days with her.
I feel like if she's working a lot and would just be paying for daycare or getting her parents to watch her that the dad should be able to have her during that time.
I'm very frustrated because their daughter is 2.5 and the mom has never connected with her. She won't even cook if her daughter is around because it's too stressful. If someone has something that her daughter wants, she tells her to chase them around and say Mine, please. She started forward facing her extremely petite daughter at 11 months and has her in a lot bed that goes up over five and a half feet off the ground. I'm pretty fearful for my beautiful niece if her mom gets her way.
This probably so ramble-y but I'm going crazy here! Anyone have any custody experiences they could share? Or anyone know of Maine laws? If brother in law has a chance at primary custody or at the least 50/50?
