Multiples with Femara

A bit of a long read but I’m having a breakdown here.

It took my husband and me about two years to get pregnant with our first who turned 1 on Nov. 30th. I just turned 31 and my husband is about to be 36. He wants three kids (we’ll see). I feel that when the youngest child is around 8 months to a year is reasonable to start trying for another baby, but my problem is that if it takes us two years to get pregnant each time, I’ll be pushing 40 having my last child, assuming we have three. I don’t want to be having children at 40. My mother did it with my little sister and she said it was much harder on her than when she had my brother and me by the time she was 30. I also worry about the risk of complications after the age of 35 for me and 40 for my husband.

So.... when we started trying for baby #2 when my daughter was 8 months old, I immediately purchased opk’s to help make sure we knew when I was ovulating. We BD in the fertile days before and on ovulation day with no luck after 4 months. So I made an appointment with my OBGYN just to talk with her about my concerns over my fertility. I told her how long it took to conceive my daughter and that one of the 4 months we had been TTC baby #2, my ovulation kit said high fertility for several days but I never got a peak result; she said that it sounds like I might not be ovulating regularly due to my opk result that month and due to taking two years for us to conceive the 1st time. In light of all this, she decided to have me try 2.5mg Femara on cycle 3-7 this cycle.

Now I’m having a breakdown over the approximately 4% chance of multiples. I researched the medication beforehand so I was fully aware of this possibility before I took it. I just started thinking about it last night because I couldn’t sleep and freaked out. If I happened to conceive twins this cycle because of the Femara, I’d have three children under the age of 2 when the twins are born. My daughter is still up at least once a night. Twins will need to have feeds every hour or two when they’re first born. I realize that plenty of parents have been through this, but the possibility of having three children up at different times through the night terrifies me.

What are your results with Femara? I’d love to hear everyone’s experiences.

I took femara and only have one baby in my belly :) 4 percent is super low, meaning there is a 96 percent chance if you conceived that it’s only one baby. Try not to worry-femara is really not known to cause multiples (clomid is the fertility medication everyone stresses about having twins with)

Clomid is supposed to have a higher risk of having multiples than Femara - and I got pregnant with just ONE baby on 100mg of Clomid.

I’ll be doing Femara next month myself. Any time you take fertility drugs, yes, you run that risk. My dr told me that your risk is more heightened if twins or multiples run in the family. They do on my husband’s side apparently. My logic - yes it will be very, very hard on my body to have twins and make life more challenging, but after everything we have been through, I would love those two babies more than any single thing in this world and for me, it makes it worth it. Sounds like you need some time to come to grips with that before you take it. Start when you feel ready ❤️

The women’s gene is responsible for twins not male.

4%. That means there’s a 96% chance for a singleton. I just got pregnant on Femara and I’m certain there will only be one in there. You’re going to have to get over your fear of multiples because next line of treatment would be adding injectables which increases your chance of multiples even more. But trust me. It took me 7 years to get my 14 month old, and 3 cycles (first with Femara) to get pregnant now! So fingers crossed it happens for you STAT!AND one last thing. Just because you turn 35 doesn’t mean a switch flips and you’re infertile. Drs now say it’s more around 40. For men it’s age 50.Hope this helps.
