Is my sons carseat safe?

I always adjust the chest clip to armpit level, but I've noticed by the time we get home, the chest clip has slid down to the crotch clip.. should I adjust the straps to be tighter?

The chest clip shouldn’t move on its own. you shouldn’t be able to pinch the straps on his shoulders. If it keeps sliding down and the straps are tight enough it might be defective and you need to call the company for a replacement.

The chest clip should not move down on it’s own. 
Are you using after market strap covers? Those can sometimes push the chest clip down, which is why they’re dangerous and should never be used, same with after market head inserts. If you’re using anything that didn’t come with the seat remove it immediately. Next make sure that the shoulder straps are coming from below babies shoulders. Then pull the chest clip all the way to the crotch buckle, tighten the seat until the shoulder straps pass the pinch test, then move the chest clip back up to sternum/armpit level, doing it this way also ensures there is no hidden slack at babies hips. 
Once you have done all this if the chest clip is still sliding down you’ll need to contact your car seats manufacturer because it may be defective and need replacing.
