Teen's first car: old or new?

Let's say your teenager can now drive themselves to school alone and you're deciding what they should drive. Let's say the money is availible to get them their own car. Do you get them an older car or newer one?

Personally, I would get them an older car because even if your child is a safe driver it will eventually break down or there will be error on the part of other drivers and a wreck will happen eventually. Maybe no more than a 15 year old model.

My sister says she wants a newer car for the advanced safety features. She just bought her son (16) a 2016 SUV.
