Membrane sweep??

FTM here and I’m confused on membrane sweeps. What is the point of this and under what conditions is it done? Can anyone ask for it or is it only for special circumstances? How far along do you have to be for doctors to do it? I’ve just never heard of this until recently!

My OB doesn’t do them. She said they rarely ever work. All they do is cause painful contractions but won’t make you progress so your in pain for nothing.

I had one done and went into labor the next day. But my contractions were soooooo painful from beginning to end. 😳 Jump started my labor though lol.

They are usually done at 39 weeks. It can help you to into labor on your own. I got mine done at 39w at around 1pm. Went into labor at 6pm and had my baby at midnight.

I had one with my last pregnancy at almost 39 weeks and went into labor 2 days later. My doctor told me yesterday we could do one next week which I’ll be 38 weeks!

I remember with my last pregnancy my midwife was like wanna do a membrane sweep?! And I was like 39 weeks. It’s basically if you aren’t showing signs of dilation and it kinda kick starts it. It didn’t work for me really I had to end up being induced on my due date from preeclampsia but I’ve heard it has worked well for other people!
