My husband's mom joined a group of "jehovas witnesses" here...(this would be some 30 years ago... He was young) They had a very bad experience and his sister almost died because of it.
I put quotes around it because my family and I studied with jehovas witnesses back home while I was growing up and had a completely different experience...they were very lovely and not cult like at all. But his was... I don't think the group his mom joined was real jehovas witnesses because way too much of it did not line up with what I remembered from our group. Some pretty scary stuff.

I went to church with my assistant from work and her church felt verrrry cult like. It was called the United Church of Christ... it was a much different experience than I am used to having grown up Lutheran. 
Women aren’t allowed to teach men in the church, they don’t accept LGBTQ, and the vernacular they were using just rubbed me the wrong way. A woman got up and spoke and called her eating disorder her “sin debt”. That’s when I knew the church was whack.

yeah...i was born and raised in a cult. took me 20 years to get out.

Yes: my mom was a foster parent and made a lot of friends who were also foster parents and one family had a foster daughter that was in a cult and married off at 16 to an old ass guy and was pregnant.
