Christmas birth story!

Lauren

I've waited forever to be able to share my birth story after lovingly reading everyone else's, so here goes.

My water broke at 7:35 Christmas Eve night, just as we had put our cookies for Santa in the oven, but I had not started having contractions. I got super emotional cause we had pumped up Christmas morning so big for our 4 year old, and now we were going to miss it. 😪 So we decided to tell him that Santa heard that his baby brother was coming, so he dropped his gifts off early. We finished opening presents and then left him with my mom and headed to the hospital with still no contractions, just some very minor cramping in the back. In the car on the way, I had maybe 3 or 4 weak contractions that were about 3 minutes apart, so I still wasn't freaking yet. We get to the hospital and they put us in triage to monitor me and check me. Contractions weren't strong at all, and baby wasn't being very reactive to them, and I was still just 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced. Midwife said they were going to start me on fluids to get baby to react to contractions, and that they would start Cervadil if he reacted, and if after 12 hours it hadn't worked, they would start Pitocin to get things going. Almost as soon as she left the room, the contractions came on fast and strong. They were regular at 2 minutes apart, but I could still talk and breathe through them. They took me up to my room, and the contractions were still very regular and strong. They tell me I can still eat and drink since my cervix was still so high and thick, so I had some water and split a ham sandwich with my MIL. As I was eating, I didn't have a contraction, but as soon as I finished and laid back down on my left side, they started up again, only a lot stronger and closer together. When the nurse came in at 11:30 to check on me, she saw how my contractions were and I told her I had a lot of pressure in the pelvis, and the pain was getting so bad that it made my back arch completely off the bed and I had to focus to be able to talk to her. She decided to check me, and I was at an 8 already, but said that she wanted to call the midwife to get her to come check to see what she was feeling. I was freaking out thinking I wouldn't have enough time to get my epidural since I had progressed so fast. The midwife came in and checked and immediately sent everyone into panic mode as she started rushing around ordering for an ultrasound to be done, causing us to freak out wondering what was wrong because she wasn't saying anything. They did the ultrasound and that was when she informed us that they hadn't been feeling the baby's head, they had been feeling his butt and he had somehow suddenly gone breech. Her demeanor was starting to piss my husband off as she was throwing me into a state of panic talking about everything that could go wrong and wouldn't answer my please when I kept asking if he was okay. I get the situation was serious, but as a medical professional, it's your responsibility to keep a calm composure for your patients. Anyways, they immediately started giving me meds to stop contractions and prepping me and my husband for a c section. Freaked out was an understatement, I was shaking so hard from fear that it looked as though I was having a seizure, as this would be my first ever surgery and I was terrified. They explained everything about the operation to me and wheeled me back to start. Right before they started, the surgeon noticed something weird and asked for another ultrasound and found it wasn't his butt they were feeling, but his feet, and he already had one foot almost all the way out. My husband and my God-send of a nurse held my hand and rubbed my forehead the entire time, the nurse constantly reassuring me that baby was okay to keep me calm, and finally at 12:33 am, our baby boy was born. 8 lbs even, 20 inches long. As scary as his entrance was, I am so thankful to finally have him here with us and to have the best Christmas gift in the world. 💙💙💙 He's 5 days old now and absolutely perfect. Recovery has been hell, but it was all worth it to get him here safely.
