Absorbency problem

Hello everyone, I'm a FTM trying out cloth diapers with my little boy. (Just turned 1 month) Lately every time the diapers are leaking and making a big mess. I finally noticed that liquids are just sort of beading on the surface of the cloth and not being absorbed. Anyone have any suggestions on what I need to do? I've been using Charley's Soap to clean them

Thank you in advance!

Fluff Love University has a really good instructional page on stripping your diapers and a lot of information about tweaking your wash routine for your particular washing machine. I'd start there!

It's worked well for me, and I personally haven't met anyone who has been steered wrong by them.

I would not. FL has been known for ruining whole stashes with their terrible advice.

Try stripping your diapers to “fix” them. Rinse cycle. Wash with about a tablespoon of blue dawn. Wash with nothing. Rinse cycle with vinegar. And as far as washing soap, I use regular tide. I don’t use anything special. Diapering my 3rd kid here and haven’t had a problem with tide.

You should never put dawn in your washing machine. It can cause damage and void your warranty.

Charlies soap is not actually recommended anymore. Also how is the fit? Does the insert get wet at all? What type of insert?

A lot of people have experience chemical burns from certain ingredients in it.

Do you know why Charlie’s soap is no longer recommended?

Charlie’s is a no no. If I remember correctly it has caused burns on children and is largely water softeners which isn’t cleaning anything. Have you checked out Fluff Love University for a proper wash routine and good detergents?

Have you tested for water hardness? Did you get the diapers new or used?

Most hardware stores sells test kits. Some will even test it for you if you bring a sample. Pet stores that sell fish also usually sell testing kits and test water for you. Some even do it for free.

How do you test the water hardness? I have both new (Alva baby with inserts) and used (bumgenius)
