Birth control?

I’ve been on birth control for 3 months to regulate my cycle and get my body used to it since I’ll be relocating to the states this month and I’d be closer to my boyfriend. Does birth control really work in helping to prevent pregnancy? Like I don’t have to use condoms when having sex? While taking birth control, I was gonna have him use condoms still but wanted to try without condoms at least once. I would have him pull out just to be sure, but just wondering about everyone’s experience?
