What causes cramps?

What causes cramps during the TWW? I’m 6 dpo and did a round of 50 mg clomid this cycle. I don’t think I’m implanting but I’m wondering what causes cramps? Does an influx of hormones cause the uterus to contract? Why would that happen during the TWW? I’m 🤷‍♀️ confused
