Does 'Controversy' sound negative?

I find that the word 'controversy' has a negative connotation to it. Might be because English is not my mother tongue (?) I'm wondering if it's neutral or negative/positive to you guys.
For me it would be
Controversy = negative connotation
Debate = neutral

I suppose it kind of does. When I think controversy, I think stressful and tense. But that’s just my take on it.

if something is controversial, it pretty much means that is has very different sides that people stand on, on it. so that in itself reads fairly neutral to me.

According to Merriam-Webster, controversy is synonymous with dispute, quarrel, and strife. Those are all negative things, so I should say so.

Well the definition of controversy is 'Prolonged public disagreement or heated discussion' - so yes, more is less it has a negative association because it suggest disagreement. But that's pretty accurate to this group anyhow!

I see controversy as neutral but “debate” as negative. To me a debate is just a formal argument, and arguments aren’t positive.
