Middle Name as a Last Name for baby?

Question

I was just wondering if it would be possible to give our baby their father’s middle name as their last name.
Or will we have to go through our own legal name change to pass on the last name we want?

I'm pretty sure you can give your child any last name. It doesn't actually have to be either parents last name, it's just confusing if it's not

I assume it depends on which state you live in.  Doesn't a birth certificate have to be approved by a judge? (To make sure it's not an obscene name) So I could see it depending on judge. I imagine you could appeal if they don't approve it.

I’m pretty sure you can put any last name on the birth certificate.  We have moms who don’t put the dad on the birth certificate but the baby’s last name is different from hers

I think it depends.  My baby will have my husband last name which now is now my last name since I changed it.  However if we were not married or engaged me personally I would give baby both last name if his involved if his not then just my last name but it’s all preferences.

It is possible but I'm not sure how. My neighbour's husband left her while pregnant with their youngest and as a 'fuck you' she gave their daughter a completely random last name. Their daughter is now in her 20s and it's never been a problem.
