Church vs Spirituality

Religion for me has been lost through the years but I'm a true believer in spirituality. When in a bad place I like to go to church and when visiting one I want to light candles. I was told by my FIL I can't cherry pick and it's not ok for me to go to church light candles if I don't support the religion. The irony is he doesn't believe in spirituality but believes in God and Christ!

I don't think it's wrong for either of us to have a certain belief.
