Birth Control

Okay so I want to start taking birth control to stop my periods because there aggravating and I hate them but I’m scared because I heard from a family member that her niece was taking it and she missed a day and her period was on for 5 months straight after that. Should I talk to a doctor on what is best for me or is what she said just a myth and I have nothing to worry about?
