how do i tell my boyfriend i have herpes

I recently found out I have herpes. My boyfriend lives out of state (long distance relationship ) and I’m scared he’s going to think I cheated on him. I haven’t had sex in a year and a half so I caught it from an old partner before him. Im just scared, I don’t want to lose him because I was careless before 😞 any advice? Please and thank you
