Iron pills 🤢

Melissa

So I did my glucose test last week and passed but they did say that my hemoglobins were low so I have to start taking iron for it. Anyways, the iron pills make me soooooo nauseous ugh! Anyone else?? Any tips? I haven’t puked since about 22 weeks and I’m currently 27 weeks 4 days and puked after taking them the first day and they make me nauseous every time

What the others are saying! Orange juice! Also my pills aren’t coated so when I start them I only take half. All three of my full term pregnancies I’ve been anemic and usually half a pill does it anyway. It depends on your levels. But half is a good way to work your stomach up to a full pill

My doctor suggested brand called SlowFe. It's easy on your stomach. I take it in the evening and have no complaints.

I always took my prenatal and iron pills literally right before I get ready for bed. I’m waiting on the results to my tests to see if I’ll have to take iron again this pregnancy but I’ll do the same thing if I do. I always try to drink something with some flavor to it as well to try and mask any smells or flavors it could leave behind.

With first pregnancy, I was told I had anemia and was given iron pills. They made me so incredibly sick, I didn’t take them. I tried everything and nothing helped. If before bed, I’d wake up in the middle of the night and puke. If with food, I’d immediately puke up what I ate. There was no hope for me. Now that I’m on baby #2, I already knew I would get same results and sure enough, I did; doc prescribed iron pills again. He knows I can’t take them... I’m just gonna increase iron rich foods like before and hope for the best.

Floradix. It’s a liquid iron supplement, much easier to tolerate - but pricey and not covered by insurance. Also- if you haven’t tried this already - every other day dosing for your tabs is probably same absorption as daily dosing (or better). Finally, you can take your tabs with food if the nausea is too awful, absorption just goes down (but prob still gives you a bump over just doing iron rich foods). Good luck!!

Are iron pills your only option? Or can you eat something with a high iron content? This was 29 years ago, but when my mom was pregnant with me she would eat blackstrap molasses in her oatmeal every day to increase iron.
