Genetic screening?

Just found out my third iui was unsuccessful so we are moving on to ivf. My husband and I had genetic testing done when we first started ttc. We have unexplained infertility and everything looks normal from me and my husband. I have amazing insurance that covers ivf, but we have the opportunity to be part of a trial that would cover everything including genetic screening for the embryo (which our insurance doesn’t cover). I’m so torn because it would take about three and a half months with the trial vs 6 weeks doing ivf outside of the trial and without genetic screening. We need to decide soon and keep going back and forth between wanting a baby as soon as possible and thinking if we are going through this whole process we should do the trial with the screening to do everything possible to implant the best embryo possible. What do you think?!

I would go with my insurance and just pay out of pocket for the testing.

If we did pgs testing on our own, it would only be a month difference so it would come down to no testing or testing with the trial.

What is the trial for? They are always for testing things (new protocols, drugs etc...).We have 100% coverage too, but no pgs testing. We did regular ivf and paid out of pocket for pgs testing. With only paying my copays, we saw it as a small price to pay for a little more peace of mind. I would vote for use your insurance and pay for pgs testing. With trials they are strict on exactly what their protocol is.

If your insurance covers ivf then I say go that route. We are 100% self pay for ivf. Pgs testing costed us 3k for 10 embryos.

Got it.. so with the trial.. what exactly are they testing? Is the trial the best for what your needs are? Everyone has a different protocol. With the trial is everyone’s protocol the same?

It’s 6 weeks vs 3 and a half months. I think we are leaning towards it worth waiting to do the tested.

Oh gotcha. I missed that part. Could you afford to pay for the Pgs testing if you went the insurance route? 6 months is a long time .. I don’t think I could handle that. We started stims 11/16/18, did pgs testing. Then with the holidays and scheduling the first time I could do the FET is on January 31st. I started stims for the FET January 4th. So for me it’s 10weeks 6 days in between and it seems like it’s taking forever.

In my personal opinion (not a dr) but have done Ivf and currently 10+5 from first fresh round, I would have done the genetic testing and think it’s smart for someone who has had reoccurring miscarriages being that 99% of miscarriages are from genetic abnormalities. I myself didn’t go with the testing because my husband and I are tubal factor and actually had no troubles conceiving, however all were ectopic.... I wouldn’t do it in your case, but then again no ones opinion should honestly sway your own. I hope this little bit helps.
