Dry cough since childbirth

I gave birth 9 days ago and since I gave birth, I have been having this nonstop dry cough that seems to be getting worse every day. I called the doc office today (Sunday) to ask about cough meds I can take while breastfeeding and the doctor on call just told me to take cough meds and didn't mention anything else.

Has anyone had the same symptoms? I am actually staying away from my baby today as I don't want to get him sick, which sucks. I hope the dry cough is nothing serious...
