How did you find out what kind of twins you were having?

I’m so confused about the type of twins that I’m having. I don’t know if they’re fraternal or identical and it’s driving me a little crazy. At my first appointment, it was hard to tell because I was 8w and the ultrasound couldn’t tell if they were in separate or the same sac. It wasn’t until I was 12w that we could see a thin membrane in between showing that they were in separate sacs. I have no idea if they’re in the same placenta though. I try to research it, but it’s only more confusing. 
Anyway, how did you guys find out the type of twins you were having? From your doctor, research, other?

My doctor thought fraternal (di/di) pretty early due to how thick the wall (lining) was separating them. Turns out they are boy/ girl so definitely fraternal. The genetic testing will also tell you what type which I believe they sent off around 16 wks with me.

At 7 weeks, They told me from how my sacs were that I was having fraternal but they could always be identical. But at 16 weeks I found out I was having a boy and a girl so I definitely know they are fraternal

Even if they do have separate placentas and in separate sacs making them di/di you still have a 33% chance of them being identical. It’s only definite they are fraternal if you have boy/girl combo.

We found out at our 8 week apt that we were having twins and knew they were identical because we did IVF and only transferred one embryo and it split. What the doctor didn’t know was if we had babies in their own sacs or not. They’d still be identical regardless because of the split but we later found out at 10 weeks they were in their own sacs. Even though they share a placenta, mo/di twins are a little less riskier than mo/mo j was told. You’re definitely having mo/di if just a thin membrane separates the two babies.

We did IVF and transferred two embryos, so we knew they would be fraternal if they both implanted. They both implanted and we're 20 weeks with b/g di/di twins! I've read about IVF embryos splitting, but ours didn't.

To me it sounds like you have modi twins. It means they are in the same placenta but different sacs. This also means they are identical. You would be able to see the two placentas if they were there. If there were clearly two placentas you would be carrying fraternal twins.
