Enlarged Kidneys?

Question

One of baby’s kidneys was measuring slightly bigger than normal at my anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I went back to the doctor yesterday for another ultrasound (now 31+1) to recheck them and now both of his kidneys are bigger than they should be so they’re sending me to a high risk doctor to get a detailed ultrasound. I’m so worried. Has anyone else had this happen?

At our 20 week ultra sound babes left kidney was also dialated... we just had our 32 weeks scan to check if it has corrected..I hope to hear soon if we are in the clear or not 🤞 Hoping your next appt checks out!

At 20 weeks both of baby's kidneys were dilated.  We had 2 follow up ultrasounds with a specialist to monitor them. At the second one when I was 29 weeks both kidneys were normal and there is no more cause for concern. We were definitely very worried when we received the news but most of the time babies outgrow dilated kidneys before birth or shortly after. The specialist we saw said it could have been because she's so long a tube could've been pinched or something like that. Had the dilation not cleared they would've given her antibiotics at birth and sent her to a urologist. Luckily it's nothing super serious.

How was your amniotic fluid level? I had to get a second check of my sons kidneys for the same thing. The dilation has normalized but my OB said if it had remained they wouldn’t have done anything after he was born and I would just have to follow up with my pediatrician. She also said if the fluid level was normal that was a great sign because that means he’s swallowing and passing fluid like he’s supposed to. Good luck, momma!

My 20 week ultrasound showed that both kidneys were enlarged. My doctor told me that it could be the baby needed to pee...or worst case would be the baby had a blockage that would need to be removed once born. Hopefully your fluid looks good and theres enough..and baby just needed to pee. My babys kidneys measured normal at my 30 ultrasound to check kidneys. Hoping that's what happens to you too!

Yes at 27 weeks we’d they said baby had mild renal pelvis dilation. Having another ultrasound tomorrow at 32 weeks
