My baby was born with an undiagnosed birth defect
My beautiful boy Tadgh was born on the 22nd of January via scheduled c section, he’s my third baby. I had my 20 week anomaly scan and all checked out perfect, this was my last private scan until my 36,37,38 week scans in clinic to check on babes growth.
Every time they measured his stomach they asked me did I get the 20 week scan and yes, it was perfect! Little did I know they could see a problem on the ultrasound and didn’t tell me, THREE TIMES. I was so incredibly uncomfortable during this pregnancy too might I add, they said I had a good amount of fluid.
Fast forward to Tadgh’s birth and the surgeon that performed my section said I had an incredible amount of amniotic fluid and seriously flooded the theatre with it - I didn’t think anything of it, I just thought that’s probably why I was so frickin uncomfortable.
Anyways breast feeding my baby for just over 24 hours and he had so much spit up and at one point he absolutely drowned my bed with a fluid he threw up and I knew then something wasn’t right so the paediatricians came to assess him.
He was taken for observation and xrays - that’s when it was confirmed he has a condition called duodenal atresia!
His stomach is completely cut off from his bowel, so everything he was eating was coming back up as it had nowhere to go.
He was transferred to Crumlin children’s hospital in Dublin and will be having his surgery tomorrow morning at 9.30 to correct this! He’s looking at a 2/3 week stay and our hearts are absolutely shattered. I’m also so so disappointed that nobody informed me of this on my ultrasounds, the reason I had so much fluid was because he couldn’t swallow it 😩
He’s also got a cracking birth mark on his forehead 🤣 to think we were worried about this seems so ridiculous!!
