When should baby start wearing shoes?

My little one has started walking, but seems to hate shoes.  He won't even try to walk in them.  I've taken him to the library a few times and just let him walk around in his socks.  Should I be more strict about insisting that he wears shoes?
Also, what are the best shoes for new walkers?

I had to buy my son a specific type of stride rights! He wouldn’t walk in his Nike’s that we were gifted. We tried about 6-7 pairs on in the store before we found ones light enough that he would walk. This was when he was 9 months too. He has gotten better with time!

If they’re not in public, there’s no reason for shoes when they’re still new walkers. I put my daughter’s on if she wants to walk around in the store or wherever, but at home and school she goes barefoot.
We got See Kai Run first walker shoes. They’re a little expensive, but are exactly what you need for a new walker: flexible sole, lightweight, Velcro straps, and durable.

I wouldn’t force it, if he doesn’t like them but it might be because they are harder to walk in. I bought a pair of ‘crawlers’ in Clark’s which are for when they begin to walk and my daughter has had them since she was 8months. Now at 11 months and once she’s been walking for two and a half months I’ve bought some ‘walkers’ shoes. 
The crawlers have a lighter sole so it’s easier to walk as they are lighter then walkers should be a bit heavier 😊
