"Is milk healthy? Canada's new food guide says not necessarily"
Came across this article about Canada minimising the roll of milk in their recommended food guide.
Instead of saying dairy is a food group that should be consumed every day, it puts it in the protein category. Basically saying it is not an essential part of the diet and encourages more vegetables and fruits instead.
I'm NOT trying to start a debate on veganism because the answers would be obvious. And it isn't a discussion about baby milk either so please don't talk about formula.
I'm wondering how people who AREN'T vegan feel about it!
If you were advised that dairy isn't as healthy as we are made to believe, and that it isn't necessary to have it in the diet, would you consider replacing it with other foods for your family?
This means getting your protein, calcium etc from other healthy foods.
Ignoring the obvious animal ethics there are still a lot of flaws with the dairy industry. We gave it up last year because of my son's CMPA, but since then I've been worried about antibiotics and growth hormones etc and make my partner buy organic if I can.
There is also the environmental impact and the mixed research about whether milk prevents/causes osteoporosis, obesity etc. I read that all the research promoting dairy is funded by the dairy industry, but I don't know much about that.
There are also reasons people will need dairy in their diet - protein, fat, formula, an already restricted diet, fussy children (a cheese obsession) etc.
But if you didn't have a medical reason, and milk was proven to be bad for your health, would you replace it in yours/your child's diet?
(I'm expecting a lot of cheese fans to say no. Haha! I never thought I could give up chocolate until my son's allergy and now 10 months later I don't mind it at all and hope to stay dairy free forever. My skin is much better!)
