I married my ex.  I think it depends on why you broke up, and if those issues have been resolved.  We dated for 1 year, broke up for over 2 years, then dated 3 years before we were married.

I married my ex. We were friends for a long time, dated for a little over a year, then broke up for about 9 months. I was apprehensive about getting serious with a coworker and needed space to figure out what I was looking for. We got back together, dated for a few more years and got married! 
A break doesn't have to be the end of a relationship but I would say there are some reasons (abusive situations, complete lack of respect, etc.) that an ex should stay an ex.

There is usually a very legitimate reason they are an ex. But apparently I was stupid and just didn’t learn...
Ex #1 broke up because we lived in different towns and hardly ever saw each other (we were in high school, parents wouldn’t let us travel alone.) We got back together 2 weeks later. Apparently he got a lot of girls’ numbers and didn’t bother to stop talking to them when we got back together 🙄
Ex #2: Don’t really remember why we broke up. A couple years later we got back together until I found out he was cheating on me while he was away for work
Ex #3: Broke up because he “didn’t have time for me” but in reality it’s because I wouldn’t have sex with him. Got back together a few years later. He was emotionally, physically, and sexually abusive that time around
Ex #4: He had no reason to break up with me, over a year later he told me it’s because he loved me so much but was scared. We tried to get back together (he moved back to Texas from California to be with me). Then he said I was “too possessive.” Um, no child, I get upset when anyone cancels plans on me every day for 2 weeks...

I dated this guy at 16 broke up three months later and at 17 (one year later) got back together. Got married had a baby and now second baby on the way

If someone shows you who they really are, believe them! And the first time! I do see some ladies in here married an ex and I’m sure it worked for them, that is not the norm lol everyone I know has had that one ex they went back to time and time again only for the same thing to happen. We dated when we were too young and got too serious too fast for our age. I called it off. Then we got back together our senior year of high school and are now married! But we also never had any REAL issues when we broke up that caused us to break up.

Took my ex back at least 3 times thinking he would change, he never did. I was a moron and didnt realize he wasn't the type to learn from his mistakes.

It's always a big mistake ... they are always sorry they will never change and they will now harbor resentment that you broke up
