Pumping and Feeding
Forewarning: This post might be kinda long.
When my son was born he weighed 6 lbs and 2 oz. At his 24 hour mark he was 5 lbs and 12 oz. Then at his 4 day check-up he weighed 5 lbs 2 oz. At that point my milk had not come in and the doctor was concerned about his weight loss. He recommended I give him formula after every feed. However, that afternoon my milk came in. I called a lactation consultant and talked to her. She said that she would recommend that I pump after every feed and give that to him. So I began pumping. My milk supply seemed to be pretty great! Then my baby gained back up to birth weight so I stopped pumping except for once a day...well I didn’t know that would cause my supply to drop. So at baby’s 2 week checkup, he had lost below birth weight again. Sooo i began to pump again. For one thing it seems like I’m hardly getting anything! It’s slowly building up I think, but I’m not sure. But for another thing-it’s really hard to pump after feeding him if he stays awake! And sometimes even if he does sleep, he wakes up after I lay him down. So how do I pump after feeding him so that I can maintain my supply?!? I really don’t want to have to switch to formula if I can avoid it...but if I can’t pump I don’t know how I’ll be able to keep up with his needs. I’m also wondering if/how I’ll get to the point where I don’t need to pump as much....
And if he cluster feeds is it ok that I’m not pumping?!?
So many questions...
