My Abortion Pill Process
BACK STORY and some honesty:
When I was in high school I found out I had ovarian cysts. It was almost every week that I had one rupture and all of a sudden they stopped. Because of my ovarian cysts I didn’t think it was possible to get pregnant. So I wasn’t having safe sex at all and I’m 22 just for reference. When I say not safe I mean ... no condoms. No pullout method. Absolutely nothing. I wasn’t even on birth control anymore. I’ve been with my bf for over 4 years and we’ve been doing that since the beginning so you can only imagine how assured I was that I couldn’t get pregnant. Obviously I was wrong.
New Year’s Eve I took 3 tests. All VERY clearly showed I was pregnant. When I say that line was DARK ... I mean INSTANT POSITIVE.
I didn’t believe it at all. Now, I know I mentioned we’ve been together over 4 years. However, when we found out I was pregnant there wasn’t a doubt in my mind what we had to do.
Our parents are both very traditional and religious. We’d both be shunned.
So I waited a few days but I made an appointment at planned parenthood under “Pregnancy test” which, by the way, is the fastest way to be seen. I finally told my bf 2 days before the appointment which was on January 4th. I was extremely emotional and I was starting to get nauseous.
By this point the most I had noticed was pressure on my stomach, I felt like I had a cold for over 2 weeks and my boobs felt swollen. I couldn’t wear anything except a sports bra but let me tell you. Being part of the itty bitty committee, I wasn’t complaining about all that.
Well then comes the appointment. We walked in (they are very understanding and gave me the option to have him there for the results). Once she said “you’re about 5 weeks and 2 days” I couldn’t stop crying. It was real.
She rescheduled us for an hour later to do the pill abortion. Now one thing I’ll warn is my insurance didn’t cover it until I asked for an authorization code (which takes up to 3 days). Make sure your insurance can cover it because that was EXPENSIVE. So we had to pay out of pocket and yes your insurance will bill the head of the insurance plan (which for me is my mom, but in that moment I couldn’t care less.) however I had to do it then and there so we paid. Out here it was $535 for the pills.
Now for the actual Process:
So first they bring you back into the room (he wasn’t allowed back there for this) and they do a vaginal ultrasound which is normal for first trimesters. The girl talked me through the whole thing. Dimmed the lights and offered to show me the screen and let me take a picture copy home. Which I did. I, of course, was crying the whole time. And not cute either. Ugly, can’t breathe crying.
and then before I took the first pill she did a blood test (I hate needles, she talked me through it). The test is to see if you’re anemic.
So then the doctor came in. She talked me through the process. Told me I can take the pill when I’m ready.
First pill you take in the clinic 24 hours before the last 4. The first basically presses pause on the pregnancy. 24 hours later you take the 4 chemical pills all at once. They call them cheek pills. Place 2 on each side of your gums between your cheeks and gums and let them dissolve for 30 seconds. After that you might feel cramping. How soon depends on the person.
Before the cheek pills you take the nausea and pain pills 30 minutes before and that’s it.
The first day was painful. I was fighting to stay awake. Didn’t throw up or anything tbh but I was extremely fatigued. The next 2 days I was sleeping all day.
They also give you a doctors note for work. So you might need at least 2 days off. I told my work it was an emergency medical procedure but once I started crying they didn’t ask. Just gave me the days off.
I will say this. After the pills procedure they reschedule you for a 2 week out follow up. It is VERY important to go to this because they need to make sure it worked. And yes sometimes only half passes. Sometimes it works the first time.
For me, I had only passed the fetus, but the sac was still in my uterus. They gave me the option to retake the pills or just do the suction method.
But like I said I’m terrified of any needles at all so I retook the pills and today was my follow up.
Glad to say it went AMAZING!
I even left with a lot of stuff.
The people at the clinic are so sweet and understanding so if you’re scared like I was, I’m here to answer any questions you might have. I was terrified.
But the follow up was great. They give you the option of birth control while there and let me tell you. Planned parenthood plays no games with pregnancy.
They gave me 12 months worth of birth control. 24 condoms. 10 lubes. FREE.
They’re all “they’re not effective for 7 days. Can’t stress that enough.”
They really said bitch don’t get pregnant again. Lollll but in all seriousness I’m here for anyone who’s nervous about their appointment or who find themselves in the same situation I was in
