Painful breastfeeding

Ashley

I saw a lactation consultant yesterday because I’ve had nipple pain since the day my son was born and he is now 6 weeks old. I have no cracking or bleeding my nipples look fine besides being a little bright pink/ red. She said his latch looked great and recommended the football hold to help put less friction on my nipples since that’s the way they naturally point. She said he does have a lip tie and to get that checked by a dentist but she didn’t think that was the cause of my pain. I’m at a loss. I’m so close to quitting. It hurts so bad.

I had the same. I used a nipple shield and I started out pumping for the majority of the feedings and gradually replaced with breastfeeding (one feeding at a time, starting with the first morning feeding) until I wasn’t pumping anymore. I applied coconut oil incessantly. I also saw several lactation consultants before I found one that made a difference. She recommended the laid back nursing position, which was a game changer for me. By around three months I wasn’t pumping at all anymore and was breastfeeding relatively pain free. I wanted to give up so many times! Pumping nearly exclusively was a pain in the ass and so time consuming/exhausting. I was in so much pain and I couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. But hang in there. I promise it gets better!

Lip ties and tongues ties can definitely lead to discomfort during breastfeeding. I would get a second option by and IBCLC (a highly rated Lactation consultant) if you are able to. Also chiropractors can work on babies as well as functional therapist (that help with more movement on the babies jaw very gently).

Do you have reynauds by any chance?

I have reynauds, is there a correlation? I had a terrible time breastfeeding. I could never make it past the excruciating pain. I lasted two weeks and pumped for 6 months.

I don’t believe so

Ties can absolutely cause pain. Get it checked.

I had similar pain until my LO was 4wks old because I think then he suddenly had learned how to latch & feed 'properly'. Slightly laying back also helped to make feeding more bearable and applying lanolin before each feed. I was also told that the latch looked ok but it didn't feel ok. Get a second and even third opinion on latch, etc; each professional I've found has a slightly different tips to give you. Your LO might still need to learn to feed 'properly' by putting his/her tongue over the gum; there are exercises out there to help. You could google them and give them a go. You've got so far, don't give up yet! There are still things you can try to help feeding become comfortable. Good luck!

Thank you for the encouragement! Yeah I think I may need a second opinion since he’s already 6 weeks old.

Try a nipple shield maybe? I know some babies need it but from my experience and some family/friends near me the tongue tie issue has been brought up by LC to all of us none of them got them clipped and all is fine. I’d do major research before doing a tongue/lip clip procedure.

I have tried a nipple shield and it seemed like it hurt more. Plus my son isn’t a big fan of them lol. I will definitely get a second opinion on his lip tie before we doing anything like that.

Maybe try pumping instead if that doesn’t hurt as much.

I had to move my son every 5-10 min from one boob to the next until I could get used to the pain. But if it’s that bad I am not sure how to help :(

I’ve been trying to pump more often in hopes to give my nipples a break and let them heal. Hopefully that helps. As for exclusively pumping. That would be my next step if I can’t force myself though the pain.

Mine were like that too, I cried and desperately researched how to make it stop hurting at 2 in the morning. I was miserable and dreading the pain of every feed. Then one day (I think around 7 ish weeks) it was like magic. Something clicked it is stopped hurting. It was amazing.

It was like that for me. It felt like my nipples were being burnt and also cut at the same time. I had to wear breast shields between feedings because I couldn’t deal with anything touching them. Have you been checked for thrush? I’ve had that before (my first baby) and it caused an awful lot of pain.

I really hope I can make it long enough to the point where it stop hurting. I feel like I’m losing my mind because everyone says it’s not suppose to hurt but it hurts so bad.
