Just got done with my HSG...
Whew, I was way worked up over nothing.
A few notes:
-Even though I’m cycle day 6, they still do urine pregnancy test prior to procedure.
-Mine was done by my fertility doctor and her nurse and they used a saline solution and the ultrasound machine vs. X-ray machine, so it is much less expensive than the other kind (not sure how much it will be after insurance claim though). This version also allows the doc to check uterus shape and obstructions.
-it’s much like a regular pap exam, although there was a little pressure when the balloon inflated (like a sharp menstrual cramp, that lasted about 10 seconds. The liquid going though was a warming sensation and just minor cramping.
-taking 800 mg of Advil 45 min beforehand helps. Also use the pad they give you after for leakage, particular with saline solution it’s quite a bit afterwards.
-the whole thing took about 10/15 minutes and the nice thing is the doctor immediately can tell you what she saw.
-bonus points if you start a cycle of famera on day 3, she does a little sneak peak to see how follicles are taking shape in the early stages. Consider it a free follicle scan!
-doctor also confirmed for three months after the procedure, your fertility is increased because essentially everything was smoothed out nice and clean. I hope this is true!
For me, tubes were all clear and uterine shape was good, which is why it was mostly painless. She told me people that have severe pain usually have some obstructions and the pressure of liquid trying to break through them can cause pain, so you don’t really know until you’re in the procedure how bad the pain will be.
Bottom line, it’s worth getting answers and checking off another box in a journey to figure out the issues. Further, it sounds like many women are successful in conceiving after the procedure. We’ve just passed our 1 year mark in ‘trying’.. although it’s taken some time to get the recipe right to fight PCOS. But now famera, metformin and prednisone has allowed for us to be going on 3 cycles of actually trying where ovulation happens. Now with hsg checked out and husbands semen analysis complete (which they gave him a vitamin for slight shape issue), we are one step closer to a bfp (I hope!)
Baby dust to all and if you are considering the hsg, do it! ❤️
