My husband had a dog when we first got together (almost 3 years old) and for the last 3 years, we've had constant vet visits. Started out with itchy hot spots which then led to him losing most of his fur. He's always been on the heavy side, so we cut back on food, but recently he's lost a lot more weight than diet should have caused (we are now able to see hip bones and feel his spine, ribs, and butt bones). Vet thought it was an allergy so we tried several special dog foods with no change, checked his thyroid, we've literally done all we can think of, and he's just going downhill. Poor dog just scratches all day every day, so we've put boots on to keep him from making himself bleed. At this point, we dont know what else to do for him. 3 years of constant vet visits, and have gotten no answers. My husband is about ready to have him put down so he's not miserable anymore, and he's only going on 6 years old. We're heartbroken and torn on what to do.

We've seen a total of 3 or 4 vets, he's had allergy pills, steroid shots, antibiotics, antifungal shampoo, checked for all sorts of bugs/mites and haven't found anything (our other dog is also not affected). We tried 4 months of hydrolyzed dog food ($60 vet cost for a 20lb bag, otherwise it would have been upwards of $90).

This food should have nothing in it to even be allergic to, so his symptoms should have disappeared in just a couple months, let alone 4.
