I’m afraid to fall on ice. Am I overreacting?

I live in Canada and we’ve had some bad freezing rain. It’s basically and ice rink outside. I’m terrified of falling because I’m 18 weeks pregnant. Am I overreacting to the risks of falling? 
I’ve been taking time off of work to avoid putting myself at risk. My friends say it’s not a big deal and I’m overreacting.

No, not at all overreacting. A fall during pregnancy can cause placental abruption among other things. Be careful out there!

I’m happy to know my concern is valid. I actually take public transit to work which is why I feel so much risk. If I drove it would be ok. Thank you for your replies it makes me feel better.

Definitely not overreacting. Im in Minnestoa so I get it. I park in a covered damp at work and have a garage at home so I never actually walk truly outside. I'm avoiding going anywhere so I dont have to and if I had to walk across an open parking lot I'd probably stay home from work as well.
We have a big snow storm coming Thursday and I'm thinking of calling into work to not put me and baby at risk in case of an accident or spin out.
I think as long as calling into work isn't going to get you fired or anything bad like that, it's better safe than sorry.

Not overreacting! I’m in mn, and everything is ice. There is no way I’d risk falling on my ass because a non pregnant friend doesn’t understand the concept of pregnancy changing your center of gravity and the risks of falling. I even have special permission at work to park in the “non parking” area right by the door and someone always puts extra sand on that area.

Agreed! I live in Alberta and we have had terrible weather for almost two weeks now. Anytime I go out with my fiance I hold his hand/arm if it's slippery as I'm clumsy and Wipeout every single winter 😂. To all women in the icy weather, stay safe and cautious! 💕

I have a nerve condition that makes me more prone to falls. I live in Minnesota and everything here is pretty icy and snowy right now. So I am in the same boat of avoiding anything that could make me fall. My truck doesn't fit in our garage so my husband refuses to let me walk across our driveway lol. I am kinda getting cabin fever. So I planned a trip in 2 weeks to Texas cannot wait to warm my feet up and be able to walk around lol.

A little, even if you do fall you almost certainly won't hurt baby unless you're further along and land right on your stomach. Typically when you fall you'll land on a wrist or knee so it sucks but you're babys okay. Just make sure you're walking carefully, consider yak tracks or something similar if you need them!

I unfortunately slipped on the ice a couple of weeks ago and I was terrified I had caused some harm. I called my midwife and she said that it is unlikely any harm was caused to the baby as they are pretty protected in there. I landed on my back but maybe it could have been different if I landed on bump. I had a scan 2 days later (already planned) and baby was happily moving around. I can understand why your scared though ever since it takes me ages to walk anywhere when it’s icy.

Me too.  I am in Canada also and take public transportation to work.  I can’t count the number of times I’ve hit a slippery patch.  I am scared I will fall one day.  I try to take it slow.  I do have those grip things to go on my boots but I think I need better ones.
