Granny square blanket?

So I’d like to make a granny square blanket for my grandpa, but I’ve never made one before and I’m wondering if they’re warm enough? I know they have lots of holes so that’s why I’m wondering lol. I’ll insert examples below (making the colours simple and less crazy). Thankyou!
