Nope definitely not necessary. My SO said he had in the past with women he didn’t really care for. It was just for fun for him. He told me he would never ever have one with me. He respect me and wouldn’t like to share me. I asked him why he did with other women he flat out said he didn’t respect em’ plus he wasn’t in a relationship. 🤷🏼‍♀️. 
I never experiment like that plus I don’t find it fun.

Jealousy? Probably. I am not the jealous type but if I saw another woman in bed with my man even if I was a part of it, I think I’d become the jealous type unfortunately
Does it help a relationship grow? I wouldn’t think so. A relationship is for two people, and adding a third would probably just create problems.
But, to each their own. If that’s what someone likes, then good for them. But it isn’t for everyone.
