Should Affirmative Action be completely done away with?

This was a topic in my sociology class, and it shocked me how divided the class was on whether affirmative action is outdated or still needed. What is your take on the subject?

I don’t think people really understand how it really works. 
The very fact that companies still discriminate over ethnic sounding names with same exact resume as someone with a non ethnic name. Is exactly why we need it. 
Affirmative action is for ALL marginalized people. White women included. 
Jamal isn’t the reason affluent Colby wasn’t accepted into Harvard. POC still face discrimination when applying or getting accepted into Ivy League colleges. 
Affirmative action levels the playing field not about achieving some “quota”.

I'm honestly not sure. I'd say some white people in America, where Im from, probably view it like they're being discriminated against. Many don't realize the privilege their skin brings them, its willful ignorance in my opinion, and others don't give a shit about the stuff people of color as a whole have been through and are still going through. 
I could see people of color viewing it as a hand out though too. Like their actual resume doesnt speak for itself because they might get a position based solely on their skin color and filling diversity quotas. 
But I also worry without it, there wouldn't be much diversity in certain work places. 
So I'm honestly not sure.

Yes. It's just racially and sexually judging people in a "positive" way. Ive benefited from it by getting jobs and opportunities I wouldnt have gotten as a white person and have beat out better candidates for the position because of it. On the flip side, I've seen the pressure on HR departments to be more diverse, which has caused good candidates to be pushed aside for subpar candidates over their skin color or sex. Ive seen minority people avoid being fired over white people to keep a diverse looking workplace. I've even been told I have to pick certain applicants for my specialized department (that requires certain experience and licensing) over the ones I picked because my picks were too white.

I was actually watching a debate about this a few days ago. Where a guy who works for affirmative action started questioning things about people and their jobs. And if they got there because of it, or because they were actually the most qualified. He literally works for them, and doesn't like the idea.

Affirmative action has pros and cons.
For companies that may be biased towards race or gender is why affirmative action is needed. When say a white person is not as qualified as another race and gets hired over them anyways. 
However, if the individual is hired to fill a quota and not fit for the job or as qualified as the white person, is why affirmative action doesn’t work.
As a woman trying to get into law enforcement a decade ago , the other officers never treated me like an equal. There were 80 officers in the department, they made a women locker room with 7 lockers. That alone screamed “your here to fill a quota”, they didn’t want more women on the force.

I think at some point it will be abolished but I really (and unfortunately) don't think that we are there yet as a society to ensure that poc will get a fair shake without it.

I really hope affirmative action is abolished. 
had people outside stores where I live trying to get people to sign for it under the guise of helping veterans. my husband asked what it was about and they said it’s actually about affirmative action. my husband said he disagrees with it and the guy said he does too, but he wants people to be able to vote on it.
