Formula & Food

First I’d like to say that I read everybody’s post related to food and what their babies have been eating at this stage, but I have yet to see one similar to my current situation. So here’s my dilemma:

My son is 7 1/2 months old. I tried starting solid puréed food around four months. My initial goal was to do a combination of purées and baby led. At that time he was just not ready and not grasping the concept, so each month I would try a little bit more and finally at about 6 1/2 months he got it and has since loved the puréed food. I still try and give him table food and things that we are eating but he doesn’t really care to pick it up and put it in his mouth. Sometimes I can break little piece to feed him but he doesn’t seem to like it as much as the puréed foods. I’ve been feeding him twice a day, usually breakfast and dinner. I eyeball some oatmeal, probably about a tablespoon or a little more then mix it with about 2 ounces of fruits or vegetables and he usually eats it all. Sometimes I’m left contemplating if I should make more because he seems like he wants to keep going. The issue is he has not been as interested in his bottles. He was never a big bottle drinker. When most babies his age were drinking 30 ounces plus, the most he would drink in one days was around 25 ounces. His doctors never seem concerned they said he just knows how to pace himself. Now since I’ve introduced food I would say he’s only averaging about 18-20 ounces a day and that’s me really forcing him to take it. When I mix his food I will try and put an ounce or two of formula in that as well just to make sure he’s getting enough. Everything I read online says food before one is just for fun and they suggest for my situation cutting out solids completely. I’m just not sure of that it’s the correct move since he seems to be enjoying the food so much. I haven’t consulted the doctor yet just cause we haven’t been back since his six-month appointment and I figured I’d get some insight from here first. Any suggestions or advice are greatly appreciated! Here’s a picture of my little guy as well!

I have a similar situation, and my baby is still breastfed. I have to resort to feeding him while he sleeps, otherwise he’s just not having it. I give him one bottle before bed and it’s like pulling teeth to get him to drink it. He’s not into breastfeeding, not into bottles, not really into purees or finger foods. I have had some luck with the bamba peanut puffs as far as finger foods go. He will pick them up and eat them, that’s really the only thing. With the other finger foods, he’s taken like 30 min to pick one up and put it in his mouth and then gives me a face like I’m trying to poison him and won’t attempt again. Overall though, it seems like I have better luck with solids if I space them up throughout the day. It seems like some moms just go ahead and increase solids when they encounter what you’re going through. I am also not sure what to do because I’m also operating on the same advice that “food before one is for fun”. I was going to ask my pediatrician about it at the next appointment as I am very eager to wean.

I used Stonyfield Organic Whole Milk yogurt. I think as long as it’s a plain whole milk yogurt with live active cultures. It is kind of sour though, so if your baby doesn’t like it (mine only likes it sometimes), then you can try a fruit flavored versionz

I haven’t tried yogurt yet, is there a specific type that would be best?

I haven’t introduced water or juice yet figuring he’d prefer that over the formula but I’m definitely going to try your sippy cup suggestion.

Yeah I started giving my son juice in his straw cup and he wouldn’t take a bottle anymore.now I have to put formula in his straw cup for him to drink it/ he’s starting not to want it in the straw cup either though. I think I’m gonna have to start mixing it in baby food

I haven’t just yet but that’s definitely something I try! I know now he could have water as well but I decided not to try that thinking he’ll like the water and want that over the bottle too!
