Fasting is only a bit over they want to put me on insulin

Marisa

I'm on a "trial" this week to get my fasting down. They are concerned because my highest was 103. I had 95 today. Also I noticed when I test with the same blood - different strip it can be lower.

I feel like I shouldn't be on insulin if I can meet the fasting requirements. I noticed it's higher because I was eating my night snack not right before bed.

All other numbers I can control unless I eat something bad like fries.

I'm going to ask my Dr on Friday. But is my baby really at risk for being a bit over or on target?

Consistently over, yes. And it will only get worse. I’d rather be on insulin and not be anxious about it (and I am, and my numbers have been great).

I never had a fasting number above 100 most were low 90 or less and I got put on insulin. Mine need to be 80 or less, they treat GD very aggresive because it can yield positive results on fetal growth if your numbers stay low. Insulin isn't too bad, you get used to it pretty quick!

Also how an average person without blood sugar issues hover between a range of 60-90 depending on the person. How did they come to the conclusion that 80 is the best for a pregnant women when you may not even under normal conditions on average be that low?

A major fluctuation like that puts you at risk at not being able to maintain your sugar though out the day.

That doesn’t sound right. If my numbers are below 80 she gets on my case about not eating right before bed. Your number dropping that low in the morning and then eating actually had been show to have the biggest increase on your blood sugar all day.

I’d personally ask for an oral medication like metformin or glyburide before I jumped to insulin injections.

The medication comes with more risks then insulin, it crosses over the placenta and then if they don’t work they will still place you on insulin.

OK so this is my routine in the morning. My husbands alarm goes off at 6:40 and I go back to bed till like 7:20. This morning I got up right away and my number was 79. How can they put me on insulin if I'm getting that low? Maybe I'm waiting too long to test?

Ur not waiting too long to test, waiting too long can actually make ur numbers higher. I sleep in late and my numbers are in the 80’s

I know it sucks and it's scary, but your doctors are right. If you're getting numbers as high as 103, it's time for insulin. I promise it isn't as big of deal as you think it is right now! I felt the same way with my first when they told me I needed it. I fought it, tried to get things under control without, but ultimately, it's what's best for baby. Your fasting sugars need to be below 90. More ideally around 80. Keep in mind, as the pregnancy progresses, it gets even harder to control so if you're struggling now it'll only get worse. It'll be okay though! It's really not that bad!

Just talked to my doctor about the insulin bc they are telling me I’m not eating enough carbs. His goal? Keep me off insulin as long as I can keep my numbers consistently good no matter how many carbs I’m getting. Fasting numbers are harder to control. My place wants me under 90 for fasting.
