Thoughts on the term ‘Western European’ for white people in the US...

Va

So at work today we were provided market research from an independent source that polls consumer shopping habits and feedback on products.

One of the areas of statistics includes the demographic of people purchasing certain product, based on factors like age, race, household income, etc..

In the race category, some people in the meeting (myself included) saw a couple statistics for ‘Western European’, and had to ask about it, because the stats were for the North American and Central American Markets... apparently ‘Western European’ is the term used for white people in the US, by this company (and presumably by other companies too?)... several people in the room hadn’t heard this. I guess the term ‘caucasian’ wasn’t as PC anymore..

When I heard ‘Western European’ I thought they were talking about countries in the western part of Europe, like the UK, Ireland, France, etc.. which didn’t make sense in context of the stats we were looking at...

It makes me wonder:

A.) I am behind on the current PC terms (which I can admit I’m not perfect so it is possible)..

B.) What CC thinks about this.

For the record, I am not personally sure how I would even answer my own poll here because this was really just a first reaction and I am curious what people think.. I’m not offended by the term, but included it just as an option (for all I know maybe the UK crowd would be offended with US white people calling themselves ‘European’ 😂🤷🏼‍♀️😜)...
