The court of public opinion

Nandina

In a lot of cases, celebrities, companies or others in the news are tried for their transgressions in the court of public opinion with real life consequences. Whether or not they're ever charged with anything or tried in a court of law.

The media brings us stories that maybe we identify with or find believable and we boycott a company or call for a resignation etc maybe without all of the facts.

Examples could be a high profile murder case where people decide X did it before the trial even starts because of what we've heard or seen in the media. Or, even after they're found not guilty (OJ for example). Another example might be Michael Jackson or sexual harassment allegations that are made public. Or say backlash on a company for it's policies (Amazon for example) that aren't illegal.

So, do you think the court of public opinion does more good than harm or more harm than good? Does the potential that an innocent person/company could be unfairly harmed outweigh the potential to punish those that are guilty and maybe protect other people from them or drive positive change?
